Vegan guide to Schladming

Vegan guide to Schladming

Schladming might not be the most cosmopolitan city, well it´s not even a city. Schladming is a small former mining town in the northwest of the Austrian state of Styria that is now a popular tourist destination.

Vegan Restaurants

Artisan

Lovely family restaurant around the corner. Their interior takes you around the world, and you can buy a lot of their furniture, art and coffee mugs. They offer great coffees and anything you need to make a great coffee at home. They make their own pastries, cakes and delicious meals from around the world. They are not a vegan restaurant, but they do offer very good vegan options and use best ingredients.

Vegan options: miso soup, carrot soup, chickpea soup with bread, hummus with veggies and bread, noodles or rice with tofu and veggies, yellow or green curry with veggies (coconut milk). They offer soy, oat and buckwheat milk for coffee or tea.

Biochi

A combination of organic store, bistro and the first certified organic vegetarian cooking school in Austria. They are vegetarian and vegan restaurant so you will always find a delicious vegan meal cooked with only organic ingredients.

They offer breakfast, lunch menu, cakes, and coffee. I mostly come there for their cakes, sometimes lunch, but mostly cake. Next to the restaurant, they offer great selection of organic products, fresh veggies and fruit, cosmetics, books, ….

Not a vegan restaurant, but one and only good pizza in town. Walk in, sit down and say “Ortolana without cheese” and you will get the best pizza with grilled veggies. You can also top it with ruccola and take a pretty good sized side salad.

Hotel Brunner

The most stylish place in town with great soy milk cappuccino and some vegan options on their menu: Fried seitan cubes with kamut noodle with spinach and tomatoes.

Just look at their lounge area. There is also an amazing tea and yoga room.

Vegan tips

When it comes to other restaurants, it gets hard in this small Austrian town, very hard.

Most of the meals (potatoes, rice…) are covered in butter.

You can get a pretty good potato or mixed salad without dressing, but I would definitely ask before.

Don´t trust any of the soups traditional restaurants. They are probably all done with meat vegetable stock.

If you end up with your friends in Papa Joe’s restaurant on the main square, they were extremely helpful and worried that I won´t stay hungry. So ask them for some grilled veggies and maybe cooked corn (order without butter). But definitely not a vegan or healthy restaurant.

Mahlzeit! and let me know if you found some great vegan meals in Schladming,

Mateja
