17 EASY THINGS YOU CAN DO FOR EARTH IN 2017

The origin of Earth Day dates back to 1970 when Gaylord Nelson, then a United States Senator from Wisconsin, witnessed the damage to the environment caused by the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California.

Fuelled by the 1960s student anti-war movement, Nelson realized that something concrete can be done for the planet if he could merge that energy with rising public awareness about the environment.

On April 22, 1970, 20 million Americans took to the streets nationwide to push for change and create a healthy, sustainable environment.

Today, over 190 countries observe Earth Day, which is celebrated by more than a billion people worldwide every year. (earthday.org)

17 EASY THINGS YOU CAN DO FOR EARTH IN 2017

  1. Reduce, reuse, rot and recycle. Recycling is not a solution – Saying NO to plastic is! So think before you buy, reduce, reuse what you have, rot the rest and recycle as the last resort.
  2. Plastic bags – replace plastic bags with a nice basket and cotton bags
  3. Plastic bottles – easily replaced with a reusable water bottle
  4. Single-use plastic like coffee and other plastic mugs, plastic cutlery and plates – carry a reusable coffee mug and se reusable plates, even if they are made from hard plastic as long as you reuse them and not throw them away after one use.
  5. Do a meatless Monday or any other day in a week. Try to not eat meat (especially beef) for at least one day in a week. Slowly you can maybe make it 2,3,4 ….
  6. Don´t waste food – use what you have, make soups, freeze leftovers, give away what you don´t want/like and buy only as much as you need
  7. Drive less. Sometimes driving can be avoided, we can take that 5-20 walk or bike to work or to town. It will be good for us and environment. If you really need to drive, maybe you can share the ride with somebody else.
  8. Fly less. I love traveling, but I hate planes. So my preferred way of traveling is definitely by train. Check most eco-friendly option for your trip on travel.panda.org
  9. Find out ways to reduce energy and water usage in your home
  10. Plant a tree or adopt a plant and avoid paper
  11. Buy locally grown food
  12. Buy less: think twice before you buy something and ask yourself if it’s absolutely necessary

  13. Stop supporting fast fashion (HM, Zara, Mango, Primark and all other fast fashion brands). More about Fashion revolution on my previous post.
  14. Buy 2nd hand clothes, furniture, sports equipment, cars, …..
  15. Speak up and spread the message
  16. Support companies  and politicians that care about environment
  17. Calculate your carbon footprint: how much you drive, food you eat (vegan or not) if you buy local food or not … it all affects how high your carbon footprint will be.
